José Aguilar Scholarship Fund

A scholarship fund has been established in memory of José Aguilar, former art teacher at Roberto Clemente Community Academy.

This scholarship is designed to continue José Aguilar's work in encouraging further education and exploration in the visual arts. It will help deserving students pursue art education and training beyond their graduation from Roberto Clemente Community Academy.

As you may know, José was highly dedicated to the school, to his students, and to the community. He believed passionately in education and taught because he truly wanted to help abolish ignorance.

Qualifications for Applicants

To apply for this scholarship a student must:
  • Be a senior at Roberto Clemente Community Academy and a candidate for graduation from the Academy. (Graduation and all prerequisite work must be completed in a satisfactory manner before the award is made.)
  • Be able to demonstrate active involvement in the arts, not only in acadamic work, but also in extracurricular work and in service to the community.
  • Submit a portfolio for consideration by the review committee.

Awards

This year the fund will accommodate awards up to $500.00 for education/training at reputable colleges or training programs, or art supplies needed to pursue higher education/training in the visual arts.

This fund will continue to grow every year. José would be pleased to know that, in his memory, scholarships will be awarded to deserving Clemente students who have the passion but lack the opportunity for further education.

Administration

A review committee established in the art department at Roberto Clemente Academy will:
  • set guidelines for portfolio submission and review
  • screen applicants for eligibility
  • screen their chosen schools or training programs for quality and legitimacy
  • choose awardees based on talent, creativity, curiosity, commitment, financial need, and willingness to serve the community

José believed that any mind that could be opened is a gift to society and to the next generation. I hope we can all work together to pass on those gifts in his name.
